Twitter has begun rolling out the ability to download tweets, for certain users.
Tweets for keeps
The news was first reported by Indian blogger Navjot Singh, who stumbled upon the feature in his Twitter account settings.
According to Singh, the downloading feature works in a similar fashion to the Facebook archive system. Once tweets have been downloaded they are emailed to the user in a zip file and are sorted in a calendar format.
Promises, promises
Twitter has been promising downloadable tweets for some time, with Twitter CEO Dick Costolo last month promising the feature by the end of 2012.
“By the end of the year I’ve already promised this, so the engineers – when I promised it publicly they’re already mad at me so they can keep being mad at me.
“Now, again, once again, I caveat this with the engineers who are actually doing the work don’t necessarily agree that they’ll be done by the end of the year, but we’ll just keep having that argument and we’ll see where we end up year-end,” explained Costolo in a statement.
While Twitter has yet to make an official statement regarding downloadable tweets, The Next Web confirmed it was testing the feature with a small percentage of users.
