Twitter is close to launching an update that will allow users to receive direct messages (DMs) from anyone on the micro-blogging platform.
Lost in translation
Until now, tweeters had to follow each other to send and receive DMs. Now Twitter plans to let users opt-in to receive DMs from anyone.
Inbox over online
The move could be a windfall for brands, who could potentially reach new users.
Another bonus could be crisis management – if an unsatisfied user receives a DM from a brand they may be less likely to publicly broadcast their complaints.
Mixed blessing
The flipside is that the update is also a boon for spammers, meaning many users may not opt-in the for the DM free-for-all.
Time will tell whether the move results in more open communication between brands and users, or a headache for users dealing with Twitter's increasing spam problem.
