Seven years ago Amazon revolutionised the e-reader market when it released the Kindle.
Now it's taking a crack at the mobile market with the release of the Fire Phone.
Fiery launch
Last week Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos announced the Fire Phone, a high-end product that's priced squarely between the iPhone and Android smartphones.
The Fire Phone is powered by a bespoke version of Android called Fire OS, and features a 3D display.
Funnel the funds
Yet the phone's most interesting feature is Firefly, an app that promises to provide advanced speech, text and image recognition.
This means that users can point the Fire Phone at a product or piece of media, for example a book or TV show, and be redirected to Amazon.com to make a purchase.
So far the Fire Phone is rumoured to recognise over 100 million objects.
Game changer
In much the same way the Kindle boosted Amazon sales by keeping users in their eco-system, Amazon will be hoping the Fire Phone performs similarly.
While the mobile market is more mature, and services like iTunes offer similar audio and visual services, few can rival Amazon's range of content.
Which makes the Fire Phone potentially the most disruptive, and interesting, smartphone to watch in years.
