Facebook has released its first product that doesn't require users to have a Facebook account.
The Facebook Messenger for Android app, and eventually its iOS equivalent, will only need a name and phone number for sign ups.
Step right up
Facebook announced the new product in a blog post earlier today.
Facebook wrote the new Messenger for Android app would allow users to “reach your contacts faster, start group conversations, share photos and more.”
After signing up, users can message anyone in their contacts list, for free.
Reaching out
By making a product for non-users, Facebook is signalling it wants to provide mobile services for people who don't necessarily want to be part of their ecosystem. And make it easier for existing Facebook users to connect with them.
The new sign up process may also help Facebook move into the space dominated by SMS (which recently turned 20) and Apple's iMessage service.
Roll out
The new Messenger app rolls out today in a number of countries including Australia, India, Indonesia and South Africa and will be available globally in the coming weeks.
A date has yet to be set for a similar roll out of Messenger for iOS users.
