Many things aren't certain in the sometimes fickle world of social media, but the inexorable rise of mobile isn't one of them.
2013 was the year the majority of Facebook users were mobile, and the latest figures show mobile is going to be even bigger in 2014.
On-the-grow
Recent data from StatCounter shows mobile devices made up a whopping 21.6 per cent of global web browsing in November 2013. That's the first time mobile has passed the 20 per cent barrier.
In 2013 mobile browsing rose by over 50 per cent – back in January 2013 smartphones and tablets only made up 13 per cent of global web surfing.
Australian connection
Australians are at the front of the mobile commerce wave, if retailers are prepared to add a few sweeteners.
Over 80 per cent of Australian mobile users are more likely to purchase an item if return shipping is offered for free, and 80 per cent of tablet owners (and 70 per cent of smartphone owners) have made a purchase from their mobile device.
The takeaway for brands? Make your New Year's resolution to have your website mobile friendly – both for smartphones and tablets.
