Cyberlink brings Action Editing to Android

Earlier this year, Cyberlink launched Action Director 2 for Windows. Retailing for $59.99, it was designed for pro-level editing of action clips by viral-hopefuls. Of course, it was exclusively for desktop computers.

ActionDirector Video Editor for Android brings it to mobile. The starting price? Free.

Production schedule

With ActionDirector for Android, integrated video camera software means it can capture a clip and have it immediately ready for processing.

Next, ActionDirector includes many editing basic. There is a simple trim function, although it only handles one clip in the timeline. Then, there’s image adjustments such as brightness, contrast and saturation. Also, you can easily add a soundtrack from a separate music file.

The action sub-menu is where the app earns its name. There, you can highlight a segment of action and apply filmic effects: slow-mo, undercranking, rewind, or loop.

Finally, ActionDirector lets you bookend your clip with credits, which can be separate clips or simple text overlays.

Device compatibility

ActionDirector demands a few more device resources than some other apps. Most 2016 devices should handle it fine. A decent selection of others from recent years will manage too.

Tested for SMK, it works well enough on a Nexus 5X phone and my Nexus 9 tablet. It wouldn’t even install on a couple of older devices.

Value and Output

Once a video is completed, it is immediately shareable to social media and messaging apps.

If Full HD is the order of the day, you’ll want to upgrade from the free base app to the full version for $3.99. The free version also includes ads and a watermark that says ‘By Action Director’. The one-time payment gets rid of those too.

Who’s a producer now?

Michael Bay won’t be using it to make his next blockbuster, but Action Director for Android may find a professional niche.

Mobile savvy YouTube producers are an obvious market. Also, communications teams whose brand relies on slick video may can use it to in-house and accelerate the production of shorter, less technical clips.
