Google will finally return some all-important memory back to some users' PCs, with an update to Chrome expected to arrive in December.
Heavy load
Chrome has been an infamous RAM hog, a situation which hasn't improved as websites gained upgrades to take advantage of new technologies.
Focusing on computers with up to 1GB of memory – the devices that need the most help – Google set itself the task of optimising its V8 JavaScript engine.
Google's changes reduced heap memory by an average of 50% on popular websites such as The New York Times and Facebook.
Eyes on efficiency
Google also worked on zone memory usage and was successful in reducing it by an average of 40% on the same websites.
Users will still want to watch how many tabs they have open at any time, but at least it will take a little longer before their computer decides enough is enough.
