Despite Facebook’s best efforts, the issues of privacy and fake news have taken their tole as users flock less and less to the social network to get their news.

More and more users are getting their news coverage from other Facebook owned apps like WhatsApp and Instagram, while Facebook’s news street cred diminishes.

According to Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism survey of 74,000 people across 37 countries, users would rather look to apps like Snapchat to stay informed.

According to the survey, WhatsApp news accessibility is up 15% – even more so in countries like Malaysia and Turkey due do less liberal freedom of speech laws.

Nic Newman, lead author of the survey, believes “We’re seeing many switching their focus to more personal, private spaces like messaging apps for sharing and discussing.”

Podcasts are growing in global popularity as trust in social network news declines, and audiences of scheduled news bulletins continue to dwindle.
