New Pew puts teens on YouTube, Snapchat

The most recent internet and technology report from the Pew Research Center studied important social media metrics for US users born after 2000.

Findings? YouTube and Snapchat are each leaders, in their own way.

Most broadly used versus Most often

YouTube is the most broadly used social media platform for teens. 85% of the age group use it. Instagram comes second for broad usage, with 72%. Snapchat is a close third with 69%. Facebook is quite some ways off with 51%.

Of the social media options, 35% of surveyed teens say they use Snapchat most often. On this measure, YouTube is a close second with 32%.

Facebook-owned options

Snapchat and YouTube are each favoured by more teens than Facebook (10%) and Instagram (15%) combined.

By these key measures, Facebook is a fading fourth for teens, more popular with poor kids than wealthy ones. Although Instagram rates well for occasional usage, it’s infrequently the favourite.

Two thirds a charm

Over two thirds of the surveyed teens use YouTube.

Over two thirds of the teens use Snapchat.

Over two thirds of them say they use either YouTube or Snapchat most often.

So, if teens are your target, spend time (and resources) on YouTube and Snapchat.

When talking to a younger demographic, are YouTube and Snapchat in your mix? If not, why not?
