Imgur has opened the gates to video and audio onto its viral platform.
Pasting the internet with memes since 2009, Imgur’s trademark GIFs have proven eminently shareable. But was this model destined for trampling in the online video stampede?
Video up via iOS
The update to version 7.0 of the Imgur iOS app adds the ability to upload videos, including sound. In the App Store, it's been renamed ‘Imgur – Meme Maker and Video’.
Release notes boast of the ability to ‘upload, trim and share awesome videos up to 30 seconds long’. It’s also now possible to put multiple videos in a single post, and even mix video with images and GIFs.
Seeing and hearing
Video upload is presently only possible through the iOS app. But, viewing (and listening to) new video posts is also possible on Android and desktop.
While users get the option to include or remove sound from their videos, they will be muted by default. This could be important for Imgur’s established fanbase, who’ve grown accustomed to silent browsing.
Folks who aren’t so old-school can explore the #unmuted tag on Imgur. It’s already populated with shared clips, complete with audio to complement the visual noise.
Is video/audio capability enough to get you to consider Imgur a part of your online promo program?
