Instagram has announced they will be enhancing video streaming, with a feature that allows users to add guests to live feeds.
Bring more to the party
Following a limited test that was rolled out last August, the newest update is meant to encourage more user engagement with Instagram’s expanding video and messaging services.
By simply clicking the “add” button found at the corner of the screen, streamers can bring anyone actively viewing the video directly into the stream.
Once added, the newcomer will appear in a separate window below the streamer.
At present, the feature only allows for the addition of one member at a time, and they must be removed before adding another.
The power of two
Instagram believes the ability to add another streamer within a live video could provide greater confidence to more timid users, with the added benefit of increased activity.
The friend network of both video hosts will receive a status icon indicating their live broadcast, which means potential growth of the existing audience.
Dual streaming could be a response to Snapchat and Periscope’s ‘selfie’ format while lending more dynamic conversation for viewers.
As a result, viewing is up 80% compared to last year so perhaps Instagram’s ‘add’ button really is adding more instant viewers.
