Facebook is in the process of rolling out a new feature for Groups that allows users to view who in their group has seen each post.
Who’s seen what?
Much like the ‘seen’ feature added to Facebook Messages a few months ago, group members will now be able to keep tabs on which members have seen which group posts.
According to Facebook’s official statement last week: “When you visit a group, you can view who’s seen each post. This way you can stay updated on the group’s activity.”
How it works
Once someone’s seen a group update, the post receives a checkmark as well as an up-to-date tally of all subsequent viewings. Group members can then hover over this displayed total to bring up a specific list of all members who have ‘seen’ the post. If everyone in the group has seen the post, it will display a message declaring ‘seen by everyone.’
Like most of their other feature launches, ‘seen’ for Groups is getting a gradual rollout over the coming weeks.
Privacy concerns
Facebook has a reputation for pushing the limits of its users privacy and this announcement is not likely to help.
Though many group administrators will likely be glad for the enhanced ability to track information dissemination, individual users may be less impressed at having yet more of their online behaviour broadcast without their express permission.
