Facebook is now 78 per cent mobile

Facebook seems be moving towards a more transparent model.

Last week the platform revealed how the News Feed is really calculated – now Facebook has announced it will share country-by-country and mobile and daily user stats.

Rethinking Facebook

Facebook explained the move is intended to help brands rethink how they engage fans on Facebook, and released the following statement.

“We are doing this because we believe brands and businesses should think differently about how people engage with Facebook, especially on mobile. A lot of people focus on monthly active users or even registered users to demonstrate their size and scale.

“We think this is becoming on old way of looking at the media world. In this world, understanding who comes back at least once a month is only part of the picture. Instead, businesses should focus on people who come back online every single day.”

Mo' mobile money

The new stats reveal what everyone suspected – Facebook is rapidly becoming (if it isn't already), a mobile platform. From Q1 to Q2 in 2013 Facebook's global active users jumped from 425 million to 469 million, a rise of more than 10 per cent.

In the US, a staggering 78 per cent of Facebook's daily users are mobile. Across the pond it's a similar story. 20 million of the UK's 24 million daily active users are mobile.

More to come

While Facebook has only released figures for the US and UK, stats for other countries including Australia are expected to be available shortly.

The figures should assist marketers in targeting Facebook campaigns around national and international campaigns. And help Facebook to sell more mobile ad space.
