Facebook is moving further into the mobile commerce market via new partnerships with PayPal and other mobile payment providers.
More mobile
From this week users making in-app purchases via PayPal, Stripe and Braintree can use the “Autofill With Facebook” feature to complete payment forms using information from their Facebook profile.
The feature has been in beta over the past months and is now rolling out to US users, with a global release expected shortly.
Partner up
The Autofill feature is intended to help app developers and Facebook's partners net more revenue from mobile shoppers. So for example PayPal still receives a cut from any purchases made using the Autofill feature.
On the run
Some 78 per cent of Facebook's users are now mobile and over the past 12 months the platform has significantly ramped up its mobile offering.
By making it easier to buy on-the-go Facebook not only helps its partners, it also shows that its in-app ads are valuable for brands. Another nice takeaway is more data on users' spending habits.
One day Facebook may decide to sidestep its partners and take over processing payments itself. But until then, everyone's playing nice and enjoying the mobile honey pot.
