Facebook has just announced Facebook Home, a major new app that replaces the homescreen on Android devices with a dynamic Facebook ecosystem.
Powered by people
Mark Zuckerberg announced the new product in a press conference, explaining Facebook Home is based around a Cover Feed which features a constantly updated stream of photos, stories, status updates and notifications.
The app has been designed to let handset manufacturers optimise Home for their devices.
Up and away
Home will be rolled out in the US from April 12 as a download for Android users with operating systems including Jelly Bean and Ice Cream Sandwich, with further devices and tablets to be added in the coming months.
The download will cost US $99.99, although the upcoming HTC First handset will have Home baked into its operating system.
Android's very good year
The announcement does two things. It quashes talk of a Facebook phone, because Facebook no longer needs a phone. HTC has built one for it.
Secondly, it cements the growing influence of Android. Just last week Instagram revealed that over half its 100 million users are on Android.
In his press conference Zuckerberg concluded by stating that only one third of the world is online. The partnership between Facebook and Android positions both brands to capitalise on the next wave of smartphone owners.
