Facebook has just launched Rooms, a new standalone app designed to bring people of similar interests together.
Room with a view?
Rooms essentially allows users to create a digital space dedicated to whatever interests them. And invite others too.
The Rooms feed works in a similar fashion to Instagram, and can consist of photos, videos and text around the chosen topic.
This content can also be manipulated by creators. For example the text and emoji's on the Like button can be customised, messages can be “pinned”, and users can employ pseudonyms instead of their real name.
Roomy enough
Facebook says Rooms is designed to help users build their perfect place.
Some early Rooms cover areas as diverse as home-cooked meals and beat boxing videos to sneakers in unusual locations.
While Rooms might be a modern, jazzed up version of the original Facebook forums, it might also prove a hit with users looking to connect with like-minded folk, while not necessarily using their real identity.
It might also help Facebook nab the real time conversation market currently dominated by Twitter.
