Facebook snags 1 billion users in a single day

It would be fair to say that Facebook is no stranger to landmarks, breaking records and generally being kind of a big deal. 

But even Mark Zuckerberg stood up and took notice last week when Facebook passed another milestone: 1 billion users in a single day.

Message to the people

Zuckerberg announced the news in a Facebook post.

"We just passed an important milestone. For the first time ever, one billion people used Facebook in a single day. On Monday, 1 in 7 people on Earth used Facebook to connect with their friends and family.
 
"When we talk about our financials, we use average numbers, but this is different. This was the first time we reached this milestone, and it's just the beginning of connecting the whole world."

One in seven

That's right, one in seven people on earth were logged into Facebook at some point last Monday.
 
To put this in context, it was only back in October 2012 that Facebook announced it had 1 billion monthly users. Now its pulled that amount in over one day. 

Global reach

Over the past few years Facebook has been vigorously exploring developing markets in Africa and South America, as user levels saturated in the US, Europe and part of Asia.
 
Initiatives to get everyone connected include solar-powered Facebook drones that beam the internet down to remote communities.
 
Their efforts appear to be working. Facebook now has 1.5 billion monthly users, with Zuckerberg promising this is "just the beginning".
