Facebook is reportedly testing a new “trending” feature that highlights popular topics.
Hot topics
Facebook first rolled out searchable hashtags in June, which allowed users to tag and search for trending topics.
According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Facebook is now testing a trending feature that appears more prominently next to the newsfeed.
“We are running a small test of a unit on News Feed. Right now it only available to a small percentage of US users and it is still in the early stages of development,” confirmed a Facebook spokesperson.
Twitter show down
The move comes as Facebook increasingly dabbles in real time topics, something Twitter has a big head start on.
How successfully hashtags and trending topics work on Facebook is still an unknown, as the newsfeed is based on content Facebook thinks is most relevant rather than recent.
If Facebook can succeed at wooing users into conversations about real-time events, it will potentially open up a new advertising stream.
You can be Twitter will be watching developments very closely.
