Facebook Events has just got a quaint, almost old-fashioned update.
Humans, not algorithms, are now curating and recommending upcoming events.
The Human Touch
Dubbed "Featured Events", this update available on iOS to Facebookers across 10 US cities.
Until now, events were automatically selected based on your location, preferences and history.
Now a bunch of Facebook employees are dedicated to discovering the best things to do this weekend. You can also receive push notifications, and are given more lead time ahead of upcoming events.
Social Butterfly
Events will be segmented into categories such as "Music", "Food", and "This weekend".
They will focus on entertainment, and avoid potentially controversial topics such as religion and politics. Which seems sensible, considering Facebook's recent accusations of news bias.
With over half a billion users accessing Facebook Events every month, if Featured Events takes off expected a wider roll out.
The bad news for brands: you can't buy your way onto the list. Although running ads alongside Featured Events may be an option down the track.
