Facebook is expected to announce a major set of updates at a press conference today.
Curated news feeds
As reported in Tech Crunch, Facebook is tipped to launch an array of curated news feeds.
It is speculated the news feeds will include Photos (from Facebook and Instagram) and Music, which will display albums friends are listening to and upcoming concerts.
While Facebook already has dedicated feeds, including a Music feed and Pages-only feed, they aren't easy to locate and haven't seen a big uptake with users.
These new easy-to-find curated feeds could change that.
Image-based ads
Photos are big on Facebook, and are shared twice as much as text updates. Now they're about to get bigger.
The new larger images won't all be close-ups of your best friend's breakfast either, image-based ads are set to be a huge part of Facebook's new feeds for web and mobile.
Cutting through the noise
By offering streams with more curated content Facebook may give its 1 billion users more reasons to spend more time on the platform – and away from rivals like Twitter and Pinterest.
On the flip side, the new streams also mean marketers can reach more targeted audiences and Facebook's revenue goes up and up.
It all works in theory. However experience tells us things in real life don't always run that smoothly. Watch this space.
