The news broke at Tech Crunch's recent AR/VR event in Los Angeles, where Facebook's Head of Augmented Reality, Ficus Kirkpatrick, confirmed the platform was building its own hardware.
The move makes sense for Facebook, which has sunk much time and treasure into getting users to view 360 and VR videos.
Currently, the majority of users watch this content on either an Apple or Samsung phone.

The revelation comes as Facebook ramps up production of other hardware devices. Last month Facebook Portal was announced, while Facebook-owned Oculus VR headsets have been steadily improving over the years.
While the tech behind VR is still clunky, AR could well be the next social battlefield with Snapchat, Google, Microsoft, and Apple all with like products in the works. Yet we still don't have hoverboards…
