It might seem like the most popular apps in the world are already ubiquitous, but the latest numbers from SurveyMonkey say those at the top have no problems finding new users.
Taking into account the iOS and Android app stores in the US from January to June this year, social and media apps dominate the new downloads and average monthly active users charts.
Be sociable
Facebook Messenger finished ahead of Snapchat for new downloads, 59.7 million to 54.5, with Facebook and Instagram not far behind on 45.8m and 40.4m.
Perhaps underlining Twitter's ongoing issues to build its user base, SurveyMonkey recorded only 10.7m downloads for the 140-character service.
The most downloaded media app was Pandora (sixth, 27.3m), which managed to top Netflix (eighth, 21.3m) and Spotify (ninth, 21.1m).
Locked in
SurveyMonkey's data for active users paints a different picture, with Facebook maintaining its place at the top (136.3m), only marginally ahead of YouTube (134.8m).
The Facebook and Google stranglehold continues as Messenger and Maps also boast over 100m users and the Play Store, Search, Chrome, Gmail and Instagram are ranked fifth through ninth.
Retaining wall
Pandora led Spotify for active users by 18.8m, while at least Twitter can say it cracked the top 20 as it came in at 17th with 35.1m users.
The user data, meanwhile, confirmed that games continue to have trouble with replay value – none made the top 30 for active users – even if in-app purchases bring in plenty of revenue.
