Location based social networking site Foursquare has announced a major redesign of its website. The platform, which allows users to ‘check in’ to locations via mobile devices to unlock rewards and deals, will now offer greater search and discovery functionality on its website.
Bigger maps, more recommendations
Foursquare’s new look site will feature a larger map that shows users which of their friends are nearby, places that have specials and venues that are currently trending. The map will also include recommendations for places to visit at certain times. For example, users who check in at midday on a Wednesday will receive lunch options, while those checking in on Saturday night will be recommended restaurants, bars and weekend venues.
The new site will also include a new search function which allows users to browse for local businesses, and the ability to build lists that will allow for a ‘virtual tour’ instead of previewing one venue.
Foursquare revamp challenges local review sites
By increasing the ability of users to search and browse for local businesses instead of simply ‘checking in’ Foursquare’s website could challenge other local review sites Urbanspoon and Yelp, which will soon launch in Australia.
Foursquare's new website is now live.
