Some social milestones are more profound than others, yet we here at SMK diligently report them all.
The latest: “Gangnam Style” has become the first video to pass 2 billion views on YouTube.
A different point of view
The music video, from Korean musician Psy, has virtually been continuously viral since its release in July 2012.
In September 2012 “Gangnam Style” was acknowledged by the Guinness World Records as the most “liked” video on YouTube, and topped music charts in over 30 countries, including Australia.
Even world leaders including U.S. President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron, and United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon have attempted the song's unique dance steps.
Unstoppable?
In December 2012 (159 days after release) “Gangnam Style” became the first YouTube video to pass 1 billion views.
Reaching the second billion has taken three times longer (525 days since the 1 billion milestone) yet the song shows no signs of slowing.
For those interested (or gluttons for punishment) “Gangnam Style” beat Justin Bieber's “Baby”.
To commemorate the occasion Google even released an easter egg – just click on the dancing Psy on the “Gangnam Style” YouTube page to unlock the magic.
