It might have been inspired by the launch of its first phone, or it may be a nod to browsing trends.
Either way Google is starting to index search results for mobile, in an attempt to give users on-the-go an improved search experience.
Twist and shout
Google is planning to release the new mobile search index within months. And it will reportedly become the search giant's primary benchmark.
This means the desktop index will continue, it just won't be allocated the same resources, or updated as often.
Massive win for mobile
The update comes as Google gets serious about its mobile chops.
Last year it changed its search algorithm to favour websites optimised for mobile. This year Google started giving priority to pages that loaded content more rapidly on mobile.
The answer for marketers is blowing in the wind: go mobile or get banished.
