Twitter is expected to start ranking tweets from this week.
According to developer advocate Arne Roomann-Kurrik, Twitter will soon begin attaching values to tweets, in a move to help developers more accurately curate the enormous amounts of tweets being generated.
How much is a tweet worth?
Roomann-Kurrik explains that designations of “none”, “low”, “medium” and “high” will be used to judge the value of tweets.
While the details of the ranking system remain murky, it's expected higher-ranked tweets will be assigned a similar importance to the “Top Tweets” results Twitter currently displays, when users search for a specific term or hashtag.
Cutting through the noise
While it appears Twitter is introducing the new ranking system to help developers make better apps, it is not inconceivable that Twitter may monetise the feature further down the track, similar to promoted posts.
There's no doubt better apps is news good for users, but it will be interesting to see how the micro-blogging community responds to their tweets being ranked.
