Is Facebook facing an engagement crisis?

Facebook has no doubt had a spectacular ascent. With 1.28 billion users and a record high stock price, Mark Zuckerbeg's social network seems fairly close to invincible as it celebrates its tenth birthday.

However new research indicates that while Facebook's audience is expanding, users are interacting at decreasing levels.

Like it or lump it

A survey by Pew Research reveals that only 10 per cent of Facebook users update their status daily, while just 4 per cent update their status more than once a day.

Snap chats

Photos still get Facebook users talking, with 15 per cent of users commenting on pictures more than once a day.

Super sharing sucks

Not only do the majority of Facebook users prefer not to regularly update, they also don't like those that over share.

Over one third (36 per cent) of respondents admitted they disliked Facebook users who shared too much information about themselves.

While 27 per cent reported they disliked “other people seeing posts or comments you didn't mean for them to see.”

Chink in the armour?

The findings aren't great news for Facebook, which relies on engagement to sell ads.

The other lesson is that brand Pages on Facebook should be aware of over sharing on Facebook, where a less-is-more approach seems to be the key to keeping users on side.
