In the tech-giant race to insert their AI into everything, Microsoft has sprinted to catch the pack by effectively integrating virtual assistant Cortana into benchmark chat app Skype.
Cortana: your mildly intrusive Skype contact
Cortana is set to offer you contextualised assistance while you Skype. It’ll suggest one-tap quick replies, related links, scheduling, and give you other options as you go.
If you’re suffering a minute of alone time, you can even Skype Cortana directly. The virtual assistant will keep you some sort of company, answering questions about ‘useful information’, like the weather, locations, your calendar and the like.
Running to stay in place
It’s good to hear about Skype with Cortana, but not exactly surprising.
Microsoft first spoke about integrating the two at Microsoft Build 2016. Since then, other tech giants have made moves and consolidated ground. Google Allo already clicks with Google Assistant. Facebook Messenger has ‘M’.
The rollout of the Cortana-infused Skype has started in the US. There are no clear announcements about when it’ll extend worldwide. I haven’t got it yet. Have you?
Are you charmed by brainy bots that shortcut your conversations with helpful hints, or are they butting in where they’re not wanted?
