Number Crunch: Twitter in Australia

Although often overshadowed by Facebook’s formidable usage statistics, Twitter has cemented its place in the social media landscape. We took a look at the latest usage and engagement figures in Australia.

1.8 million Australian users

The total number of Twitter users in Australia reached approximately 1,800,000 as of April, 2012, according to Margin Media’s analytics data. This figure is up 200,000 users from the previous month of March, 2012. 

10% penetration of the Australian population

SocialMediaNews reports that Twitter penetration in Australia has reached approximately 10% of the entire population.

66% of Australian Twitter users are male

66% of Australian Twitter users are male and 34% female. This contrasts with Twitter usage demographics in the US where 52% of users are are female.

34% of Australian users are aged 45 – 54

The 45 – 54 range is the most well-represented age group on Twitter in Australia, totaling 34%.

67 million Twitter page views per month

A grand total of 67 million Twitter page views are currently recorded by Australians every month.
