Number Crunch: Twitter Q3

After a rocky start that saw a tumbling stock price and user base, Twitter has bounced back in the second half of 2014.

Here's what's happening today at the original micro-blogging platform.

Usage

Twitter now has over 675 million registered active users, while 77% of monthly active users reside outside of the US.

On average these users generate 2.1 billion search queries every day.

Average

The average Twitter user has 208 followers.

Close to half of all Twitter users access the platform daily, accounting for 58 million tweets every 24 hours.

That's roughly 9100 tweets every second.

Lurkers

Twitter still has a problem with lurkers – users who have accounts but do not tweet.

Currently 43% of all Twitter users are so-called lurkers, while 391 million Twitter accounts have zero followers.

Celeb cred

Twitter is really, really popular with celebrities. Fans of the platform include US President Barack Obama, Pope Benedict, and of course Kim Kardashian and Justin Bieber.

Last month Queen Elizabeth II sent her very tweet.
