They say necessity is the mother of invention. With Instagram snapping at its heels, Snapchat is being forced to innovate, and quickly.
The latest update: Snapchat Spectacles might be getting Augmented Reality (AR).
Something to see here
Snapchat’s first generation Spectacles were launched in the US in November 2016, and in Europe last month.
The Spectacles let users record images and videos, which can then by posted to Snapchat.
Now a patent filed by Snap indicates Snapchat's second-gen Spectacles will include AR.
A new reality?
The patent indicates that Spectacles V2 will determine a user’s location and project related AR content around them.
This could presumably work as an extension of Snapchat’s popular Geofilters. For example, seeing a Statue of Liberty icon in New York. It's not hard to imagine this functionality being rolled out to brands.
While Snapchat has been dabbling in AR for some time with the release of World Lenses, it hasn’t shifted the needle much when it comes to its share price.
Perhaps a new set of specs could help Snapchat leap ahead of Instagram’s clutches, for a time at least.
