A recent report focusing on teens and their social media use has revealed the contrastive effects on their personal life.
The kids are woke, but it doesn’t matter
New data released from Common Sense Media reveals teenagers are aware of the pitfalls, yet it's more popular than ever.
The survey sampled 1,141 US teens ranging from 13-17 years of age. It reveals teen usage has shot up 36% since 2012 and the drugs of choice, as many parents will already know, are overwhelmingly Snapchat and Instagram.
All told, Snapchat accounts for 41% of teen social media usage, Instagram nabs 22%, with Facebook clocking in at a paltry 15%.
The damage
According to Jim Steyer, Founder and CEO of Common Sense Media, “…they are more aware of some of the hazards on their emotional and personal wellbeing.” So the future is not bleak, my friends.
What’s interesting is the rise in teen irritation when friends who can’t put their mobile down yet find it difficult to put down their own device as well. Welcome to the club.
So in the end, kids’ social media intelligence is on the rise.
Are you surprised by the mixed attitude of teens towards social media? Do you feel this could be a maturing of social media engagement? Give us your two cents in the comments below.
