Every week a new report or infographic seems to pop up containing tidbits about the major social platforms.
Many of them include pertinent data, such as how many users Twitter has, or what percentage of Facebook's base is mobile. But what about the users themselves? Who are the people generating all these tweets and Likes?
An annual report from the Pew Research Centre gives a fascinating look into the average social media user in 2013.
Facebook leads the pack by a country mile, at least in the US. 67 per cent of internet users who use social networking tools are on Facebook, with Twitter a distant second at 16 per cent.
Making up the field is Pinterest (15 per cent), Instagram (13 per cent) and Tumblr (6 per cent). Women are more active than men on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest.
Age
The younger you are, the more engaged you're likely to be on a social network. 83 per cent of internet users who use social media are aged between 18 – 29.
Urban
City slickers are more taken with social than their suburban and rural neighbours. 72 per cent of Inner city dwellers are Twitter users, compared to 67 per cent for suburban and 63 per cent for rural residents.
Education
Pinterest attracts the highest number of College educated women, while 68 per cent of Facebook users have a College education. Only 5 per cent of Tumblr users do, though this may be due to a younger user base.
