If the age of social media has taught us anything, it’s that news travels fast. News of the new Pope, royal babies and the winners of reality TV shows was all broken on social media well before traditional media channels.
But as the adage goes, with great power comes great responsibility. The modern media company will have scores of journalists simultaneously tweeting, posting, replying and generating content.
How does a company track all that data, reduce risk and operate efficiently? SocialNewsDesk might have the answer.
One dashboard to rule them all
Launched two years ago in the US, SocialNewsDesk (SND) is a social media management tool designed to help media organisations keep on top of multiple social media accounts – sort of like having your own Hootsuite set up but with unique features created just for news organisations.
The tool allows publishers to both post and monitor multiple Facebook and Twitter accounts from one dashboard while enforcing the best practices which are unique to newsrooms.
Tony Shepherd, a broadcasting veteran who is rolling out SND in Australasia, says this functionality gives his clients the edge in monitoring and breaking news, building engagement and securing social accounts.
“SND allows you to take command of the social media activity throughout your entire organisation, allowing you to manage account access, limit liability and significantly reduce the possibility of hacking,” explains Shepherd.
Analytics
SND also comes with analytics that help identify popular content to media organisations and give journalists real time feedback into what stories are working.
This comes in the form of a daily Social News Report, similar to a ratings report.
Risk Minimisation
Recently the Associated Press Twitter account was hacked and in the resulting confusion the Dow Jones Industrial Average (not to mention AP stock) tumbled. Other recent social media crises from Qantas and Coles show how damaging a hack or tweet can be.
Shepherd says SND can significantly reduce the risks of hacking by having robust passwords and controlling access.
Social Management
While SND is designed for media organisations, the model shows that large organisations increasingly need systems in place to manage multiple social media accounts so they can see what’s working, report back to staff and minimise risk.
