MySpace, the original social music site, has relaunched with a new design, social features and the help of Justin Timberlake.
Late last year MySpace released a video revealing details of its new look, and this week it finally lifted the curtains on its refresh.
Keeping up with the Zuckerbergs
While MySpace achieved huge success in the early 2000s, it subsequently lost ground to platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.
In fact, MySpace's relaunch was somewhat overshadowed by Facebook's Graph Search announcement on the same day.
Discovery
Gone as the black backgrounds and cluttered ads MySpace was once notorious for. The platform now has a clean, image-focused design that has clearly taken cues from Pinterest and Tumblr.
New features include the ability to create and share playlists, and a greater emphasis on discovering content by new artists.
Sign up socially
Users can now sign into MySpace from their Facebook or Twitter accounts, as well as share content from these networks.
As part of the relaunch, MySpace users can also stream co-owner Justin Timberlake's new track, 'Suit and Tie', after signing up.
Change of tune?
MySpace has had mixed fortunes in recent years. After being sold for US $580 million by Rupert Murdoch in 2005, it was sold six years later to Specific Media Group and Justin Timberlake for US $35 million.
Whether users respond to the changes and embraces the new look MySpace in the age of music streaming services such as Spotify and Pandora remains to be seen.
