With a lazy 500 million tweets sent every day there's no denying Twitter can be a noisy place, something the platform is looking to address with a new “Mute” button.
Shhhh
Reports are surfacing of iOS and Android users noticing a “Mute” button on the Twitter app, that allegedly allows you to block tweets from users, but not unfollow them.
The muted user is not aware they've been muzzled.
A diplomatic solution
The feature could be a handy, and diplomatic, way of filtering out content from noisy users without affecting your relationship.
Currently there is no way to hide or filter tweets, and the feature seems similar to the 'Unfollow' function on Facebook, which allows you to unsubscribe from another users' feed without unfriending them.
While third-party services like Tweetbot have long offered a Mute feature, this update is another sign that Twitter is increasing its functionality in order to keep users in its eco-system – and ad structure.
Even the noisy ones.
