Twitter is reportedly working on a new feature that delivers recommendations via direct messages to users.
Right on message
According to Mashable, Twitter has established the test account @Magic Recs that direct-messages users recommendations on who to follow.
The Magic Recs account currently has just over 15,000 followers. Its profile description reads “This is a Twitter experiment. Follow me to receive instant, personalized recommendations for users and content via direct message.”
These recommendations are based on the recent activity of accounts the user is already following. So if a number of accounts you follow start following a new Twitter user, Magic Recs may send you direct message quietly recommending you do the same.
Users must follow Magic Recs to receive the insider tips.
Overstepping the mark?
Twitter already offers recommendations based on the profile of users you are already following, but Magic Recs takes this a step further by basing this on the activity of these accounts.
On paper it sounds like a good idea and will potentially help users identify new accounts and trends they might have otherwise missed.
How tweeters will respond to messages from Magic Recs is another matter. Twitter has yet to officially comment on the feature and it's unclear how often Magic Recs will be offering its words of wisdom, and how pertinent they may be.
