Yelp Australia surpasses one million monthly users

Yelp Australia, the company that connects users with local business, passed a major milestone this week: one million unique monthly visitors.

The news coincides with Yelp's one year anniversary of launching in Australia.

Locally, one in 15 Australians are now using Yelp, and more than 43,000 businesses have been reviewed.

In Melbourne, the most popular restaurant on Yelp is MoVida Bar de Tapas, while in Sydney Din Tai Fung takes top honours.

100 million

Globally, Yelp broke another record in January – 100 million monthly unique views, and that's not counting the 9.4 million mobile devices used to find businesses.

To commemorate the occasion Yelp released an infographic showing how users and brands are engaging with the service.

The phone is ringing

During January the Yelp app generated 4.596,760 calls,  475,891 updates to local businesses were submitted and over one million reviews were written.

All this accounted for businesses owners on Yelp reporting their customers spending, on average, US $101.59 on their first visit.

Shopping and dining

The most commonly reviewed businesses on Yelp were shopping (23 per cent), restaurants (21 per cent) and home and local services (11 per cent).

Who is Yelping?

It turns out Yelpers are a well-heeled lot.

Most are aged from 25 – 34 (24 per cent), earn over $100,000 (39 per cent) and have attended or graduated from college (59 per cent).

More than 50 per cent of Yelper are more likely to have spent over $10,000 or more on travel in the last 12 months and 72 per cent are more likely to have taken 16 – 20 domestic business trips in the past 12 months.
