At the recent CES in Las Vegas YouTube announced it will soon support HDR (high dynamic range) video.
Brighter brights, blacker blacks
HDR video provides users with an extended range of colour palettes and contrast ratios. The press release says this results in more realistic and naturalistic clips – ideal for sports events and activations.
The catch: for the moment you'll need a HDR-enabled television to view the enhanced videos in all their glory.
Viewing
The update is rolling out in the next few months, and brings YouTube up to speed with similar offerings from streaming rivals Amazon and Netflix.
This year is already shaping up to be an interesting one in video streaming, with Virtual Reality units such as Oculus Rift hitting shelves before June.
Facebook has also just announced it will be fully supporting 360 video shortly.
