Target is planning to add a mobile payments service to its Cartwheel app.
E-shop till you drop
Cartwheel was launched three years ago, and now has 13 million active users. The app allows shoppers to display a barcode at checkout and save on products.
According to Recode, a mobile payments system may be added to both Cartwheel and Target's flagship app later this year.
This would allow users to pay for products with their mobiles in-store.
Target is expected to trial the system with REDcard holders first, before a wider roll out.
Ring a Ding Ding
The move comes as retailers push back against payment systems such as Apple Pay and Android Pay, by launching their own. In the US Walmart and Kohl's both have their own mobile payments system.
This could help bridge the gap for shoppers, as Apple Pay is available for shoppers to make purchases via the Target app, but not in stores.
