Number Crunch: iPhone

It's hard to imagine a world without them, but it's been less than a decade since the iPhone walked into our lives and turned the smartphone market upside down.

Today we're looking at the most influential (perhaps controversial) smartphone ever made.

Early smarts

Apple began developing plans for a smartphone back in 2004, with the first generation iPhone officially launched in June 2009.

Over the next five quarters Apple sold 6.1 million iPhones, making it the third largest phone manufacturer – behind Nokia and Samsung.

Phone home

To date over 700 million iPhones have been sold, and 52% of US and Canadian smartphone users own an iPhone.

The iPhone now commands 42% of the US smartphone market.

Call it in

There are now nine iterations of the iPhone, spanning different sizes, colours and processing power.

The iPhone 6 is still the most popular model on the market, with a 30% share of all iPhones.

App it up

While Facebook and Apple might not always see eye to eye, iPhone users really Like the social network.

The Facebook app and Facebook Messenger app are the two most popular apps on iPhone.

Power up

An iPhone 5C costs around US$200 to build. Apple sells the same unit (without contract) for up to US$800.

And in case you were wondering: over a typical year an iPhone costs $25 in electricity to power.
