Instagram is testing a new geofencing feature, which would allow users to post to select locations rather than globally.
The invisible grid
According to app researcher Jane Manchun Wong, “[geofencing] allows creators to limit the specific countries where their content will be visible,” without fear of governmental repercussions, in theory.
Twitter and Facebook already offer similar restriction controls specific to different countries which makes the addition no surprise at Instagram.
No official word yet
While there's no official launch date, seeing how most key feature at Facebook have rolled over to Instagram, we can expect something soon(ish).
Instagram has also been experimenting with ways to maximise location tracking and potential ways to improve voting and registration for US mid-term elections through stickers and ads.
At the core of the new addition is news awareness and creator protection, two things worth Gramming about.
