Guess What? Amazon is the #3 Ad Platform

Who makes money selling online ads? You can probably guess the top two. Perhaps more surprisingly, though, a report says Amazon is coming third.

Heatseeker

Online marketing research house eMarketer has shared figures that show Amazon shooting up the charts to secure a significant market share for online advertising revenue.

For 2018 in the US, eMarketer forecasts Amazon will earn US$4.61 Billion by selling ad space on its own online properties, as well as the fees it earns ‘facilitating ad transactions across the web’.

# In context

Amazon’s 2018 revenue projections give it 4.1% of the market, while powerhouses Google and Facebook together account for 57.7%.

So, Amazon is still a distant third, but they’re emerging as the main third-party in the game. Amazon is expected to consolidate the position to achieve 7% market share by 2020.

No accounting for organics

eMarketer notes that a portion of the observed revenue spike can be put down to a tweak in Amazon’s accounting method. zthe revenue is real, but the way they document it changed.

Still, they insist that ‘stronger-than-expected organic growth’ is also a major factor.

Outside of Google and Facebook, how have your ad buying experiences with other online ad platforms gone?
