Facebook Stories and Instagram Boomerang add AR Drawing

Both the Facebook and Instagram apps will soon be launching an augmented reality feature that will allow users to draw on the world around them.

Paint the town

A feature, accessed via Facebook Camera, will enable Instagram and Facebook users to take advantage of its latest creative tools.

AR drawing allows users to virtually scribble on the world around them and view their creations as if they were fixed points of the landscape. They can also be added during or after recording.

After acquiring the AR startup MSQRD in 2016, Facebook launched AR effects the following year. It recently released AR tracker target experiences which interact with real-world QR codes.

Goose and gander

It appears what’s good for the Facebook is good for the Instagram, making the app’s continued push for Story-driven content fertile ground for churning up interest through AR.

Facebook is trying to make Stories more popular with Instagram and Snapchat users, by testing Stories as the default app for content generated through Facebook Camera.

The quest for innovation does not seem to have been slowed by Facebook’s recent hearings and remains determined to manifest itself as a hub for text, photo, video, and now AR.
