Facebook is pulling the plug on M, its virtual assistant that existed for a few years somewhere deep inside Messenger.
M to M
Facebook first launched M in beta in August 2015 – the concept was an assistant that used human workers to train and improve its AI. M could theoretically do everything from booking dinner reservations to gift recommendations.
Over time, it was expected that M's AI would improve to the point where it could be widely rolled out.
However that never happened, and after 2.5 years M only every reached some 2000 users in California.
Glass half full
Putting a positive spin on things, Facebook says it has "learned a lot" from the M experiment.
While M may might no more, Facebook is still letting brands create their own chatbots on Messenger. Let's see what they come up with next.
Do you use chatbots for your business? Let us know how in the comments.
