Data storage service Dropbox has just released a major update that aims to link the files, apps and devices of its 175 million users both on and offline.
Out and about
Dropbox's CEO Drew Houston announced the news at the recent Dropbox Developer Conference in San Francisco.
A new Datastore API will allow users to store, link and sync any data including documents, images, videos and even game progress.
This means that if a user creates a document on their smartphone on the way to work, that document will be automatically synced to their office computer and all Dropbox-enabled apps on that device.
The API works by storing data on the device until it reaches a wi-fi zone, so users can compose emails and send without having to log on later.
No more dropping out
While Google, Apple and Amazon all have similar functionality, DropBox is not tied to any operating system or platform.
This is an advantage for businesses looking to stay in touch across a variety of platforms and devices both in the real world, online and offline.
Dropbox's Datastore API is now in beta. To find out more visit dropbox.com.
