After months of beta testing, Facebook is rolling out Graph Search to US and UK users.
Open up
Graph Search is Facebook's new search engine that uses social data to inform results. For example, Facebook users can ask questions like “Restaurants in my area my friends like” or “Movies my friends like.”
Search result include images, personal information and links.
Google challenge
Graph Search is Facebook's biggest challenge to Google so far. By leveraging data from its 1 billion users, Facebook is well-positioned to provide personalised search results. In a further snub to Google, Facebook will refer any search query it cannot resolve to Bing.
And of course all this data means more targeted ads based on users searches and preferences.
Whatever happens, it appears the era of social search is upon us.
