Facebook opens up to new content

Facebook has begun adding content from rival social media platforms to its Facebook Home screen in a bid to woo new users.

Home and hosed

Facebook Home was launched in April this year, as a new app that replaced the home screen for Android users.

It hasn't exactly captured the hearts and minds of the Facebook faithful, which explains why Facebook is opening up its gates ever so slightly.

Under a new beta testing system, Android users will now see posts and photos from Flickr, Pinterest, Tumblr and other third-party apps on the lock screen – in addition to Facebook posts of course.

Sharing is caring

Mark Zuckerberg announced the update at TC Disrupt. Since launching the Facebook Home app has had somewhere between 1 million and 5 million downloads, according to the Google Play store.

While this might sound like a lot, considering Facebook has 1.15 billion users it's a drop in the ocean. The figure seems even more modest when considering Facebook has 699 mobile users.

If Facebook can lure more user to become Facebook Home converts, it will be better positioning itself to leverage its increasingly mobile audience.
