Mobile check-in service Foursquare has launched self-serve advertisements, which allow retailers to rank higher in Foursquare search queries.
Still searching
Foursquare announced the feature in a blog post, explaining that if a user is searching for a nearby business (for example a cafe), retailers can now pay to appear more prominently in the results.
Tellingly, businesses pay nothing to run the ad unless a user visits their store in person on via the Foursquare app.
Additionally, Foursquare will also serve ads to users who are searching for a related topic or have visited similar places.
Mobile movement
With over 35 million users, Foursquare has some pulling power when it comes to retailers. According to Foursquare, 78 per cent of people searching locally on a mobile device make a purchase.
By giving businesses to the option to play before they play, Foursquare is giving brands another incentive to check-in.
