G Suite admins can now access the post-delivery status of emails sent and received by users within their domain.
What you see
As of now, full internal message details are accessible to G Suite admins via ‘Email Log Search’.
Functionally, this will allow them to track internal email delivery status and see whether it’s been seen, opened, read and/or marked.
Beyond that, it also indicates the current location of the message in the recipient's account folders and shows any labels attached to it.
Log date limitations
Full details in message delivery logs are maintained and accessible via the Search function for 30 days. After that, some stuff is kept and others aren’t.
For messages that were received more than 30 days ago, the Search will only show ‘post-delivery’ message details.
Administration, not spy games
It’s important to clarify that these details are exclusively available for messages that have been both sent and received by users within the G Suite admin’s domain.
Emails sent from an internal address to an external address (or vice versa) will not have all details available.
This is not an internet-piercing spy tool. It is simply for monitoring and investigating the status of internal communications.
How often would this sort of feature get used in your organisation?
